Our Sailors

Sessions are open to anyone with a disability both young and old.  Most of our sailors come from the Peterborough area but quite a number travel from much further afield to enjoy the facilities we are able to offer.

Aged from 8 to 80+ and with a huge range of disabilities our sailors can experience sailing in any of our three types of boats and take part to the level that they enjoy and are comfortable with.  Our sailors range from independent individuals to large groups from a range of care establishments. All are welcome.

Those Sailors who wish can improve their skills via the RYA Sailability Certificate of Achievement Scheme which we introduced in 2014.  The main purpose of this scheme is to enable people with a learning disability to achieve set tasks in sailing, and to be rewarded for that achievement.  Full details of the scheme are on the RYA website

Sessions last about 30 minutes and there is a charge of £5 which goes towards paying for the considerable cost of our operation.

All sailors must wear a life jacket which we provide and help to fit correctly.  We also have a range of waterproof clothing available to borrow for when conditions are less than perfect.  Remember your sunscreen lotion and that it is always colder on the water than on land.

Our largest fleet of boats are Challenger Trimarans.  These boats are very stable and comfortable to sail.  We help our sailors into the cockpit of the boat on the shore.  Our volunteers will help carers with this and we have two Invacare Jasmine battery operated passive sling lifts fitted with lifting attachments to suit both type of commonly used slings.  The Buddy then sits alongside the sailor to provide as much help and reassurance as is required.

The Access dinghy and the Lugger are alongside our pontoon and assistance will be given to board.

If you think that Peterborough Sailability could be for you then please contact us for further information and to arrange a visit.
